Treating Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Trauma is a complex psychological and emotional response to an event or series of events that overwhelm our ability to cope or function.
Trauma can be:
- Acute - meaning you experienced a single incident which was exceedingly stressful or dangerous event. Examples include car accidents, traumatic injury, or witnessing a traumatic event.
- Chronic - meaning there were multiple and related incidents which overwhelmed our ability to feel safe, secure, and in control over our decision-making or circumstances. Examples include being victimized by systemic abuse in familial, interpersonal, or occupational relationships.
- Complex - when you were exposed to abuse as a child which had negative and lasting implications to your body, belief systems, and overarching wellbeing.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can occur after you experience or witness a deeply terrifying or life-threatening event. It is often accompanied by flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, avoidance of things which are activating or triggering, mood disturbances, nightmares, sleeping difficulties, and deep, embodied fear. It is painful, debilitating, and can be resolved through EMDR.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-established intervention which alleviates the physical, mental, and emotional distress associated with traumatic experiences. EMDR reduces the emotional intensity associated with the memory, allowing you to remember - when you want - the memory, and not relive it. Through this process, triggers are reduced, emotional activation decreased, and nervous system functioning restored. These changes are permanent and can positively improve your life and wellbeing.
EMDR Can Help With:
- Adoption Trauma
- Childhood Abuse or Negative Events
- Distressing Life Events
- Motor Vehicle Accidents
- Natural Disasters
- Nightmares and Night-Terrors
- Serious Accidents
- Sudden Loss
- Traumatic Injury
- Vicarious Trauma
- Victimization and Acts of Violence
- Victimization by Abuse or Bullying
- Victimization by or Expose to Domestic Violence
- Witnessing Sudden Events
- Witnessing Workplace Injuries or Death
